We have over 300 people RSVPed for the show, it's going to be incredible! If you are in the Savannah area, please come out on Friday May 28th to One Nine Gallery! We would love to see you!

I worked with a friend of mine on a poster for an annual Savannah Golf Tournament. She handled the type and final piece a well as the art direction, and this is the image I made for her. We're going to age the golfer a bit more I think, apparently the golfers in this tournament aren't as young and hip. It's not his fault he's fabulous...

I'm now obsessed with the theater posters of James McMullan. I can't get enough of them. (above) His different treatments of watercolor are so wonderful, he utilizes washes as well as thick application and flat punchy color. I took a good look at his theater poster books for my creation of my own theater poster.

Initially this poster drove me crazy. There are so many parts of this story I was having trouble deciding what to portray and focus on. After 43857483957934 designs were thrown out, I went with this one. I rewatched Mamma Mia, and realized 95% of the movie was someone partying and dancing. Mamma Mia is one giant party. So, I wanted to capture that aspect in a single image for the poster. As well as a sweet and funky perspective.
A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Yuko Shimizu, Chris Sickels from Red Nose Studio, Christoph Niemann and Anita Koonz and hearing them speak about the direction Illustration is going. They discussed the importance of collaboration and shared some of their experience. I'm pretty sure I almost died when Anita said hello to me. Her New Yorker covers are what got me interested in the market of Illustration. Being in that room of Illustration giants was incredible!! I was also able to meet the Art Director of HOW Magazine and I think she'll be a great contact in the future. She even agreed to discuss my work with me.

I've got some freelance still in the works as well as some last minute projects..... new post coming soooooooooon

Hello mayyyy

So many exciting things have happened in the last two weeks! I have put together an 11 person show at ONE NINE GALLERY on May 28th at 7pm! Some of my particitpating classmates/colleagues include: Kelsey Garrity, Kristin McLaughlin, Erik Riley, Lauren O'Connell, Graham Abbott, Peach Tao, Sam Miller, Tyler Grobowsky, Gaby Molina, Darion McCoy and myself. The huge range of styles and tecniques is reallly awesome, it's going to be such a good show! (Not to mention all of the good food and booze we have ordered for it!) The show is called DEPARTURE, and the poster should be done by friday. We all created ship images reflecting our styles, and they are all so fun!

I also have a freelance project in the works right now. It's for the cutest organic cookie company, and I'm really excited about the imagery. I'm creating a partial template and a spot illustration for gift cards. Here's some ideas I've proposed:

If I had cookies growing my garden, I'd be the fattest kid on the block. This is really fun concepts to work with, I'm looking forward to working with this company again, I love companies that like fun whimsical designs.

I've also been working a lot of fun things up in Linda Warner Constantino's Watercolor for the Illustrator. Here is the food Illustration I made for a sectional piece in a cookbook...obviously the salad sections. I left room for type to be dropped into....
I've got a theatre poster with a deadline for this weekend, so that should be up soon, MAMMA MIA! Now that I've finished my new marketing plan, I've got so much to do!!

Website, logo, letterheads.... I'm a busy girl

So I've spent literally the last 3 days redesigning my website and teaching myself about Photoshop slices and Dreamweaver. I am proud to say I beat the Dreamweaver beast into submission and produced a streamlined and brand spankin' new website. Check it outttttt

http://haleyjonesart.com

Somehow I also found time to create my logo (thank God for Daniel Powers typography crash course) which is now plastered on all of my mailer goodies and website.

I've been researching art reps as well, I am highly considering signing with one as my next career move. I'm meeting with two this weekend at the Career Fair, but I have quite a few on my radar thanks to some research and directories....and the expertise of Daniel.

I am in contact with a publisher creating a childrens Ebook based on a set of children's songs, and I am creating a character based on the song "Fisherman Jack". They are making their decisions on illustrators based on the character design, so I'll have that up within the week.

I've been doing watercolor studies like a madwoman too..... next post next post.

LAST QUARTER AT SCAD......wait what?

Holy shitake. I'm officially through with my first week of my last quarter. I have nine weeks of college left. NINE. NUEVE. Like, count them on my fingers nine. I'm taking an online english class which is a no brainer, and actually kind of fun seeing it's my first online course. I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune once the novelty of it wears off. I'm taking a self-promotion course as well as a Watercolor class (about time for someone who works in watercolor)

I finished Portfolio pretty strong, and actually just had my pieces reprinted yesterday for my portfolio case. I was really surprised how happy I was flipping through it. I have plenty of room for additions, so I really need to get on that.

Heres my portfolio as of now. (Out of order, but you get the picha)

Chateau Marie Antoinette Champagne Label

Character Design for the Astrological Circus

Editorial Image to accompany article about US eating habits and the rest of the world

Hilton Head Poster Competition

Spread from my TIN SOLDIER book dummy

I've got a lot of technical work coming out of my watercolor class for a week or two, but I'll be posting the class studies and projects as they come along. I'm also going to be trying to pump out some personal work now that i MAY have more time on my hands. Fingers crossed.

Where's the fast forward button?

This is the most together I've ever been for finals, I'm really impressed with myself. My schedule for Portfolio has really made me time manage.... whadoyaknow, maybe I AM responsible?

The end of the quarter is so close I can taste it. I've been working my butt off on my children's book dummy, a modern version of the STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER. I'm super excited about it, it's developing really nicely. I've chosen to bring 3 spreads to full color, and the rest in finalized sketches, since I'm going to try to send it off to publishing houses and try to get signed on with someone. Here's some of my earlier character studies from the beginning of my process... these are 3 characters the soldier comes in contact with through his journey.
I'm done with the fish spread, and I'm 75% done with the other two, I'll be posting them soon, seeing that their due tomorrow and the full dummy is due tuesday. AHHHHHHH

I finished my Advertising piece for my portfolio class, and I created a new champagne label for the company Chateau Marie Antoinette. I may change the text? Thoughts?
I've worked on two projects for friends outside of schoolwork (looking back I'm not sure how I found time?) My friend Brittany from work and her boyfriend Joel are getting marrriiieeeeeddddd and they're having a beach wedding in Charleston. I friggin love weddings, how could I say no to helping her create a lovey-dovey graphic for the beach bag gift? It's simple and fun, just going to be a monoprint on a bag.... and now I just remembered that I forgot to email her yesterday....
I also made a new-age phish inspired poster for my friend Ashley's advertising design project. It's a competition for a tree planting organization, and if her group wins my poster will be up in NYC. Pretty cool. She wanted a psycadelic meets indie meets treehugger poster. This is what that meant to me.

I should probably email Brittany...

The neverending portfolioooo

SO. I'm in my second to last quarter here at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), and I'm currently in Senior Portfolio, Children's Book and a stupid art history class....which is so retarded I'm not even going to give it a name. I'm pumping out pieces for my portfolio currently in a scramble to have a consistent and strong one to take on the world with. Oh GOH, the real world.

Here's my two fully finished pieces I've made in class so far....

[Watercolor, photoshop] For the Humane society show coming up soon at the Savannah Mall Gallery. Bring your friends. there's going to be puppppiieeesss!

[Watercolor, photoshop] This editorial piece is based on a New York Times article about American eating habits and what we need to change. It describes how our eating habits have infiltrated other cultures, but the small-portion-eating French and the health conscious Japanese.
Makes me hungry everytime.

I'm slowly reworking my Hilton Head Piano Competition poster, so that NEEDS to be don soon. I'm also working up my other editorial piece, which is sitting on my desk unpainted. Yeah, I need to stop procrastinating......
